Res 17 NOV II I made an inspection of the ground surround-
-ing the Island Quarters at Taipo, on the 12th. instant.
Mr. Orme who accompanied me had arranged for the contractor who is making the new golf links near Sheung Shui to be present, so that an estimate of the cost of some of the works might be ascertained.
It was found that this man was prepared to lay
down turf at a price very much below Hongkong prices ..
The cost of black soil will be very much reduced (by over $2,000 according to Kr. Dunn's estimate for the same work) owing to Mr. Orme bringing it in on his own boat.
The present, therefore, seems a favourable
opportunity for carrying out the work.
To put the grounds in good order I would
suggest that the sun of $1,000 be spent in the following way:-
Labour required for uprooting shrubs and rank grass on plateau and breaking up ground at 60 cents per 100 sq. ft.
Supplying and laying down turf on plateau at 21 for 100 sq. ft.ar.Orme informed me that the contractor for making the new golf links would do the work at the above rates).
Transport of black earth to and
from Mr. Orme's boat......
Total for lawns.
.8150.00

Planting Trees and Shrubs.
.$150.00
Clearing slopes d creepers, grass
and useless undergrowth..
300.00
8450.00
Total for whole.
.81,000.00
This last item refers to the slopes all round the building. There
are many good shrubs and trees on them and these would be left, but the whole looks very untidy at present.
Of course it will be of very little use spend- -ing the above sum on the grounds
unless there is some
continuity
